Tips for Breast feeding Mothers:
Breast Milk is the primary source of nutrition for newborns before they are able to eat and digest other foods.
*The WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. (No need of anything including water in the first six months).
*Supplemented breastfeeding is recommended until at least age two and then for as long as the mother and child wish.
*Another doubt is whether you can feed your first baby when you got 2nd pregancy?.Sure, you can feed your baby eventhough you are pregnant untill your body allows you.
* Benefits of breast feeding include a 73% decreased risk of sudden infant death syndrome, increased intelligence, decreased likelihood of contracting middle ear infections, cold and flu resistance,a tiny decrease in the risk of childhood leukemia, lower risk of childhood onset diabetes, decreased risk of asthma and eczema, decreased dental problems, decreased risk of obesity later in life, and a decreased risk of developing psychological diseases as it ensures a bonding between mother and baby.
*Breastfeeding also provides health benefits for the mother. It assists the uterus in returning to its pre-pregnancy size and reduces post-partum bleeding, as well as assisting the mother in returning to her pre-pregnancy weight. Breastfeeding also reduces the risk of breast cancer later in life.Lactation protects both mother and infant from both types of diabetes.
* It is now universally recognized that there is no commercial formula that can equal breast milk.
Eventhough all mothers are very much aware of the benefits of breast milk, someone faces a tragic situation that their milk supply is very much low and they can't satisfy their young ones. but, Don't worry here are some tips for u to increase ur supply..
*Prepare for your milk to come in:- This preparation should be start from the third trimester of pregnancy itself. From 7th month of pregnancy onwards start gentle massaging of ur breast with any oils for 5 to 10 Mintutes daily, which will help to increase the supply later. From this period onwards there is secretion of a watery or milky fluid from ur breast, try to squeeze it out gently.
There is a belief that nipple stimulation during pregnancy will lead to premature labour(ie,delivery before 37weeks).But its not true because, nipple stimulation will lead to pulsatile secretion of Oxytocin which will enhance milk production later. For labour to occur, there needs a continous secretion of oxytocin which happens only when all the other factors of labour sets in.So mild nipple stimulation will not lead to premature labour.
Actual supply of milk occurs on about the third or fourth day after birth.
*Try to breastfeed within the first hour of birth.
*Plan to breastfeed about eight to 12 times in every 24-hour period. Always feed on demand.
*Try not to introduce a bottle or other nipples, including pacifiers, until breastfeeding is well established. Baby could get confused.
*Nurse in a calm environment to help your milk let down atleast in the first few days. Keep in mind, "The more you nurse, the more milk your body makes". Breastfeeding is a learned process; none of us are born knowing how to do it.So avoid all tensions and anxiety.Keep in mind our mental restlessness will affect our supply.
*Avoid unnecessary medications.Use of some antibiotics may hinder secretion of breast milk.Take medicines only after proper consultation.
*Drink plenty of water like 12 to 13glasses per day. Drink water before every feed. Drinking a glass of milk is also good.
*Avoid too much spicy, hot, sour and cold foods in the initial days of feeding which will affect ur supply.
*Eat rice with onion and ghee.
*Eating Shark fish( both Dried or fresh)is very good to increse milk.
*Eat lot of leafy vegetables like muringa ila(Drumstick leaves),cheera(Spinach) etc.
